Reconciliation

Those who approach the Sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God's mercy for the offense committed against him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conversion. (CCC 1422)

The Sacrament of Penance allows us to reconcile our relationship with God after it has been wounded by our sins.  Although it can be referred to as reconciliation, penance, or confession, they all entail God's forgiveness and include three elements:  telling the priest your sins;  receiving absolution; and completing a penance. According to the Precepts of the Church, Catholic are obliged to go to confession at least once per year, although many Catholics find it helpful to their spiritual journey to go more often.

It is important to be well prepared for confession.  Click on an Examination of Conscience below if you would like help in preparing.  The Act of Contrition is prayed at the conclusion of your confession.
